USA - Contemporary Art - The Best of Los Angeles and New York
Join art collector and journalist Sue Gardiner on this journey through Los Angeles and New York's thriving art scene. Visit galleries, museums and sculpture parks and meet dealers and artists.
Suggested Itinerary*
1. Saturday 24 September - Los Angeles
Depart Auckland for Los Angeles on Air New Zealand. Arrive same day at
lunchtime and transfer to our hotel for the next 4 nights. Afternoon at
leisure.
2. Sunday 25 September - Los Angeles
Today we will visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Eli Broad
Contemporary Art Centre. LACMA 's seven-building complex is located on
twenty acres in the heart of Los Angeles, halfway between the ocean and
downtown. The first phase of the project opened in early 2008, introducing
an open-air pavilion called the BP Grand Entrance as well as the Broad
Contemporary Art Museum at LACMA , featuring 60,000 square feet of
exhibition space on three floors.
3. Monday 26 September - Los Angeles
Today we will visit the Getty Centre in the morning and the studio of well
known artist Diana Thater in the afternoon.
4. Tuesday 27 September - Los Angeles
Today we will visit various Dealer Galleries and an artist studio. To
finish off our time in Los Angeles we will enjoy a drink at Gallery 1301PE.
5. Wednesday 28 September - New York
This morning we transfer to the airport for our flight to New York. On
arrival at JFK we will transfer into our Manhattan Hotel.
6. Thursday 29 September - New York
Our first full day in the Big Apple will give us a good grounding and feel
for "Big Art" with a visit to the Museum of Modern Art and either the
Guggenheim or the New Museum.
7. Friday 30 September - New York
Today we will delve further into the local art scene by spending the day
visiting dealer galleries in Chelsea.
8. Saturday 1 October - New York
Today we plan to visit New Zealand artist Max Gimblett in his studio to
find out about his practice. Later we will visit another artist in their
studio.
9. Sunday 2 October - New York
All aboard the bus for a day excursion to the Storm King Sculpture Center.
Widely known as one of the world's outstanding sculpture parks, Storm King
Art Center is located approximately one hour north of New York City, in New
York's Hudson Valley. Storm King's permanent collection of sculpture,
dating from 1945 to the present, includes works by many of the twentieth
century's most influential artists, integrated into a pristine, 500-acre
landscape of rolling hills, fields, and woodlands.
10. Monday 3 October - New York
Todays excursion takes us to Dia:Beacon, an hour out of New York by train.
In May 2003, Dia Art Foundation opened Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries, as a
museum to house its renowned permanent collection of major works of art
from the 1960s to the present. Located on the Hudson River in Beacon, New
York, Dia:Beacon occupies a nearly 300,000-square-foot historic printing
factory.
11. Tuesday 4 October - New York
Our last day in New York is at leisure - there are so many things to see
and do in the Big Apple that we couldn't spend a week without some free
time for shopping and sightseeing. If you wish for more art there is always
a visit to the Met Museum or the Whitney or the Frick Collection.
12. Wednesday 5 October - New York This morning we check out of our hotel and after a little last minute shopping transfer back to JFK airport to start the journey home. Farewell New York! Our early afternoon flight takes us back to Los Angeles and on to Auckland.
13. Friday 7 October Arrive Auckland this morning at approx 6am.
