Jordan & Syria - A Journey Through (15 days)
Jordan and Syria are two countries that have much in common. Their strategic location ensured that all the great early civilizations passed through the region. These influences can be seen in the magnificent sights of Petra, Jerash, Bosra, Palmyra and Crac des Chevalier. Those more interested in the present will enjoy exploring the souqs of Damascus and Aleppo.
- Day 1: AMMAN - Arrive in Amman and check in to your hotel. No meals.
- Day 2: AMMAN - DESERT CASTLES - This morning we visit the desert castles east of Amman. The castle at Azraq dates back to Roman times and was used by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) as his desert head quarters. Other castles date to the Omayyad rulers of the 7th & 8th centuries. On our return to Amman we visit the city's great Amphitheatre. Approx. 6 hrs round trip. (BD)
- Day 3: AMMAN - AQABA - Drive south to the Red Sea coastal town of Aqaba. Free afternoon. Approx. 6 hrs driving. (BD)
- Day 4: AQABA - WADI RUM - PETRA - This morning there is the chance to go snorkelling in the Red Sea. In the afternoon we visit the deserts of Wadi Rum and enjoy a jeep safari through some of the most spectacular areas. Afterwards we continue to the hidden city of Petra. (B)
- Day 5: PETRA - A full day tour of this magnificent site. Evening Turkish bath (US$30). (BD)
- Day 6: KERAK - MADABA - MT NEBO - DEAD SEA- AMMAN - Crusader castles, ancient mosaics , panoramic views and a visit to the famous Dead Sea. A busy day ends in Amman. (B)
- Day 7: JERASH - DAMASCUS - In the morning we will visit the well preserved Roman site of Jerash. Later we continue across the border into Syria and visit Bosra en route to Damascus. (B)
- Day 8: DAMASCUS - We have a walking tour through this amazing city, including the Omayyad Mosque, the National Museum and a walk through the old souq. (B)
- Day 9: MAALOULA - CRAC DES CHEVALIER - Maaloula is one of Syria's most beautiful villages, with houses clinging to the face of enormous rocks. It is also the only place in the world where Aramaic (the original language of the bible) is still spoken. We visit its monastery and then continue to Crac Des Chevaliers, one of the most impressive Crusader castles to be found in the Middle East. After visiting the castle, we walk through the nearby valley and end up at St George's Convent. (BD)
- Day 10: APHAMIA - HAMA - ALEPPO - We visit the Roman ruins at Aphamia and then continue to Hama, famous for its huge water wheels. Later we drive to Aleppo. (BD)
- Day 11: ALEPPO - We have a walking tour of Aleppo including Aleppo Museum and a walk through on of the best preserved souqs in Syria. In the afternoon we visit nearby St Simeon's Monastery. (BD)
- Day 12: PALMYRA - Drive through the desert to the ancient city of Palmyra. This evening we can watch the sunset over this spectacular settings from Queen Zenobia's Castle. (B)
- Day 13: PALMYRA - Palmyra is one of the world's greatest historical sites and dates back to the 2nd century. We will have a guided tour of this breathtaking ancient city. (B)
- Day 14: DAMASCUS - Return to Damascus where the rest of the day is free. (B)
- Day 15: DAMASCUS - Tour ends after breakfast
