Italy
Italy is a place you have to travel to more than once. The first time is spent
doing the sights - the architecture, churches, frescoes, galleries and hill
towns absorb you completely. Then you need time to get into the Italian life,
so you need to go back again - and this is when you get to ensconce yourself in
a small village and do some walking or cycling or perhaps do a painting course
or learn Italian.
Walking past the five cliffside villages of the Cinque Terre is a favourite walk as is the beautiful 18 day Pilgrims walk from Siena to Rome. For a more leisurely paced trip you can enjoy day walks around Tuscany.
A car will allow you the freedom to visit small hill towns, enjoy picnics amidst paddocks of flowers, and laugh about Italian drivers. Don't miss sitting drinking coffee and watching young men and women on scooters, cellphone in one hand, cigarette in the other, often a small dog at their feet as they weave through traffic and jostle for position at the lights - this is the real Italy!
