Mexico Ancient Civilizations

Discover Mexico's Aztec, Zapotec, Mayan, and Spanish cultures on this 2-week journey of ruins, pueblos and beaches.

  • Day 1: Arrive Cancún
  • Day 2-3: Playa del Carmen - Once you settle into your beach chair under a palm frond palapa next tot eh Caribbean sipping a margarita, you'll understand why Playa del Carmen is one of the stars of the Mayan Riviera. Chill out on the beach or try parasailing, snorkelling or diving in underground caverns (cenotes).
  • Day 4-5: Mérida - After a stop at the legendary Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá, make your way to Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán State. Known as "la ciudad blanca" (the white city), Mérida is a cultural centre for the region, with a top-notch museum and public performances most nights. Explore the colonial centre on foot or in a horse-drawn carriage, take a trip to the Uxmal ruins, visit Progreso beach or spend the nights dancing like the locals!
  • Day 6-7: Palenque - Leaving sunny Yucatán behind, we hit the highway and travel through the states of Campeche and Tabasco to the state of Chiapas, home of Palenque. One of the most beautiful Mayan sites in Mexico, Palenque is set in the Chiapas jungle and is rich with colourful, riotous flora and profuse wildlife.
  • Day 8-10: San Cristóbal de las Casas - Known for its ties to the Zapatista revolution, San Cristóbal is an architectural and cultural wonder. Take a side-trip to some outlying villages and visit some local homes. Experience day-to-day village life and learn how locals combine traditional beliefs and modern religion with intriguing results.
  • Day 11-12: Oaxaca - The colourful and lively markets and the impressive Zapotec ruins of Monte Alban are just two of many reasons to visit wonderful Oaxaca. An excellent spot to pick up handicrafts and souvenirs.
  • Day 13: Puebla - After a short drive on one of Mexico's comfortable buses we hit Puebla, famous for its hand-painted tiles, unique handicrafts, mouth-watering Mole Poblano and rich colonial history.
  • Day 14: Mexico City - Explore the world's largest metropolitan area or take an optional day trip to the famous archaeological site of Teotihuacán.
  • Day 15: Depart Mexico City
