PNG - Rabaul to Alotau: Islands of Smiles (11 days)
Our journey begins by exploring the tranquil isles of the Duke of York Islands, a group of dramatic volcanoes and coral atolls where ancient traditions flourish. We then take an in-depth look at east New Britain where you will experience expedition cruising at its best as we go in search of adventure. The leisurely pace of this voyage will enable us to explore hidden bays and striking coral reefs while also allowing time for visits to a number of culturally distinct communities such as the fabled Trobriand Islands and Milne Bay Province.
- Day 1 - Embark Rabaul - Surrounded by six volcanic peaks, some of which are still active, we cruise out of stunning Simpson Harbour and into the Bismarck Sea as we head east from New Britain in search of adventure.
- Day 2 - Duke of York Islands - The picture-postcard setting of azure blue water and gleaming white beaches belies the sacred nature of these islands. Local tribes assign special spiritual significance to the Duke of Yorks, with ritual costumes painstakingly made at various locations throughout the islands.
- Day 3 - Lambon and Lamassa, New Ireland - We spend today exploring the southern tip of the long, narrow tropical island of New Ireland. Mountain ranges and dense rain-forest form a spectacular backdrop to our explorations. This morning we aim to visit Lambon Island where the spear-wielding 'Msalai' or bush spirits may welcome us, where local villagers re-enact their first encounter with Europeans. Later in the day we'll head to Lamassa, where we hope to explore small fjords and the remnants of the legendary Marquis de Ray's settlement.
- Day 4 - East New Britain - Investigating the area around Wide Bay, we hope to Zodiac up rivers in search of crocodiles, tour a coconut plantation and for the more energetic, trek to an impressive cave system. Our visit to Karlai plantation this afternoon promises to be one of the highlights of our expedition, with a mesmerising cultural show performed by four tribes from the East Pomio region. We will watch traditional sing sings from the Mengen, Sulka, Baining and Tomoip peoples as well as performances from the region's school children.
- Day 5 - East New Britain - We explore the central Pomio region and aim to walk to the stunning waterfall at Wara Kalap, visit an ancient stone carving and a fresh water fish hatchery. We hope to snorkel the exceptionally clear water of some of New Britain's best coral reefs, teeming with a kaleidoscope of brilliantly coloured tropical fish. Our on board lectures and interactions with the coastal Tolai communities will give us a deeper understanding of these charming people.
- Day 6 - Trobriand Islands - We are welcomed by the Paramount Chief of the famed 'Islands of Love', a group of tranquil coral islands where a unique traditional culture has survived. We may have the privilege to see the energetic yam harvest dances performed by smiling locals in traditional costumes alive with colour.
- Day 7 - Marshall Bennett Islands - This enchanting island chain is home to a rich array of aquatic life and spectacular tropical scenery. We look out for some great spots for Zodiac cruising, nature walks, birding and snorkelling. A casual stroll along a warm sandy beach backed by swaying coconut palms or swimming in warm waters teeming with colourful fish. You decide!
- Day 8 - Woodlark Island - Outsiders rarely visit the scenic beauty of remote Woodlark Island. Greeted by a flotilla of outrigger canoes and the village chief, we are accompanied by Woodlark's friendly locals as our naturalist leads a hike into the forest to learn about the island's outstanding botanical diversity, where we may see parrots, loris and flying foxes.
- Day 9 - Egum Atoll - There will be opportunities for Zodiac excursions around this exotic atoll and we intend to explore several of the islands that dot the rim. The residents of this sparsely inhabited paradise are part of the unique cultural phenomenon of the Kula Ring. Our lecturers will introduce us to this circular pattern of ceremonial trade relationships.
- Day 10 - D'Entrecasteaux Islands - We'll explore this mountainous group of islands and hope to visit Fergusson Island, notable for its rimordial landscape of hot springs, boiling mud pools and impressive geysers. The exceptionally thick rainforest on Fergusson is one of only two places in the world where the rare Goldies bird of paradise can be seen. Bottlenose dolphins frequent the waters surrounding these dramatic islands and their fringing coral reefs offer excellent snorkelling opportunities.
- Day 11 - Alotau - This morning we will arrive at the laid-back coastal town of Alotau, capital of Milne Bay province and bid farewell to our travelling companions.
