2: Indonesian Borneo - Orangutans of Kalimantan & Sun Bears - escorted by Dr Ste...
*** New departure for October 2010 planned *** Please contact us for more information.
Have you ever imagined visiting Kalimantan and seeing wild orangutans up close and personal? On our 'special escorted departure', lead by Dr Stephen Van Mil, you will enjoy a very personal experience in the Borneo wilderness and see this wonderful animal. There's an opportunity to meet orangutan infants at the Care Centre and to chat with volunteers and experts who have devoted their lives to the care and rehabilitation of these amazing animals. It's here where you will learn about the projects that are keeping them alive.
Stephen is a former veterinarian, a dedicated animal lover and a Conservationist. His 'Animal Media' company specialises in all aspects of media involving our wonderful creatures of the world. In conjunction with Fork Films, the award winning The Last Trimate (2008) was a world-released documentary narrated by Mel Gibson and featuring the amazing life-work of Birute Mary Galdikas and orangutans in Indonesian Borneo.
"I have been fortunate enough to film and lead ecotours into Borneo a number of times over the past few years, and this tour is the most exciting I have been involved with! This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Apart from the extraordinary experience of Camp Leakey, and staying and travelling on the incredible Sekonyer River, visiting the OFI Care Centre in Pangkalanbun, and interacting personally with orphan baby orangutans, this tour will visit a sunbear sanctuary in Samboja on the East side of Borneo. We are the first ecotourist group to ever visit and stay at this remarkable location. Joining us will be the highly acclaimed artist Nafisa Naomi (www.nafisanaomi.com), who will produce a wonderful collection of orangutan and sunbear portraits. Laura Dundovic, Miss Universe Australia 2008, and international actress and animal rights campaigner Imogen Bailey are also joining us. There will also be media to cover the journey's of Nafisa, Laura and Imogen.
One of the major purposes of the visit is to provide a vitally needed blood-analysing machine, which has been kindly donated by IDEXX, to the OFI Care Centre. With hundreds of homeless orangutans in their care, and limited capacity to run health checks on them, this machine will prove invaluable. An Aussie Veterinarian will be travelling with us, and will stay on to help train Indonesian Vets on full use of the equipment.
And if all that's not enough of an incentive to sign on, Nafisa has kindly made 6 framed original pastel paintings as gifts to the first half dozen ecotourists to register their places!
So don't delay - this is a wildife lovers experience not to be missed - I look forward to sharing the wonders of Borneo with you........."
