Highlights of the Karakoram (Islamabad to Kashgar - 15 days)

Amongst the world's greatest journeys is this - the Karakoram Highway. From Islamabad we fly to the mountaineering haven of Skardu, then meandering towards the Khunjerab Pass we wind through the valleys and villages of Northern Pakistan. Follow in the tracks of ancient trading caravans to discover tiny villages cut off from modern life, but still offering warm welcomes that defies all expectations. We explore the Hunza Valley and gaze upon glistening glaciers, crossing the world's highest border before descending to the turquoise lakes and stark deserts of Western China. Along the way we meet the mountain tribes - their faces and hospitality reflecting centuries of tradition and merging cultures.

  • Day 1:(Sun) Arrive in Islamabad and transfer to hotel.
  • Day 2:Fly to Skardu (weather permitting). Alternatively, explore I slamabad - Shah Faisal Mosque, Daman-e-Kok viewpoint and Rawalpindi Bazaar.
  • Days 3-4:Explore the mountaineering base of Skardu before travelling the scenic road to Gilgit.
  • Day 5:Gilgit - visit the Kargah Buddha and local bazaar. Free time.
  • Days 6-7:Travel through Hunza valley. Explore Karimabad - Baltit Fort and museum. Village walk.
  • Day 8:Hopar-Nagar Valley. Jeep excursion to glacier. Stay at Duikar village, with sunrise views.
  • Day 9:Return on foot through villages to Karimabad. Drive to Gulmit.
  • Day 10:Drive to Passu. Optional walk at Borit Lake. Visit suspension bridge and Passu village.
  • Day 11:Full day hike on Passu glacier or relax in village.
  • Day 12:Continue to Sost, crossing of Khunjerab Pass (4733m). Stay in Tashkurgan.
  • Day 13:Drive to Kara-Kul Lake, with stunning views of Muztagh Ata (7546m) en route. Visit nomad encampments at Kara-Kul Lake before driving to Kashgar.
  • Day 14:Explore Kashgar - Old Town, Abakh Hoja's Tomb and Id Kah Mosque.
  • Day 15:Trip ends in Kashgar this morning after the famous Sunday Markets
